Crystal River Snook July 17th 2010

With only a couple of weeks before Mrs. Capt. Dan has to go back to teaching, she requested another day on the water. I have an area to the north of the Crystal River where I have usually done very well on snook this time of year. Well, once again we arrived at our destination and had an immediate hook up. Becky caught this beautiful snook on her second cast, took a quick picture and it was safely released to fight another day. We continued on and saw a few pods of snook all about the same size (mid 20" fish) and a some hefty red fish cruised by the boat. I estimated seeing close to 20 snook for the 2hrs we fished, but only one hooked up. No reds today, but we did catch a few trout to add to the day. Chasing scallops in Homosassa tomorrow, see you soon... Capt. Dan

Crystal River Trout Galore July 14th 2010

I had a fantastic 1/2 day charter out of Crystal River today and we loaded up on the trout. I met Seth and Tim at the Port Hotel and Marina, after I got my ice and bait from Pete's Pier, and off we were. We ran offshore to the 10ft grass patches and it was non stop action all morning. Trout, grouper, sea bass, bluefish, lady fish and a couple sharks kept us busy. We had our 15 keeper speckeled trout by 11:30 am and also picked up a couple of nice siver trout to add to the bag. The trout fishing continues to be as hot as the weather and the DOA shrimp continues to be the top producing lure. We were back at Pete's a little after noon to clean fish and feed the tarpon to finish up an awesome day. Thanks guys for the great time and I'll see you next time... Capt. Dan

KIng Of The River Tournament July 10th 2010

I fished the Crystal River High School King of the River fishing tournament this past Saturday. Crystal River High was my high school and it was good to see some old faces again. I deceided to target trout and did extremely well. My wife, Becky, was my teammate and we had our limit in no time. We caught and released numerous keepers throughout the day but couldn't get the big gator trout. However, we did place 3rd and just missed 1st place by ounces. It was a great time and thanks to all the sponsors and donations for making the tournament a great success. Go Pirates..... Capt. Dan

Crystal River Double Limit July 9th 2010

Wow, the bite was on today! I had a full day grouper charter out of Pete's Pier and Aaron and Doug joined me for a memorable day. We left the dock a little before 8am and our first stop was to check the pinfish traps. They were loaded and it was a good sign it was going to be a good day. Our first grouper stop was in 28ft of water and that was all we needed to catch our 4 gags. Frisky live pinfish was what the grouper wanted for breakfast. We had our limit by 10:30am so we ran inshore to the grass patches and finished up the day with 10 keeper trout. A combination of DOA shrimp in the glow and root beer holographic colors helped us add the trout limit to the boat. It was an awesome charter and I thank you both for the great time. Here are the guys with today's great catch.... Capt. Dan

Homosassa Inshore Slam July 7th 2010

Today Capt. Dan got schooled! My wife Becky joined me for a fun day of running around the mangrove creeks. We left from Pete's Pier, ran out the salt river and set my pinfish traps for an upcoming charter. After the traps we set, we made a run to one of my favorite areas off Homosassa called Sam's Bayou. Once there, out came the gold spoons and the red fish were waiting. Becky caught several red fish ( I did not catch any) in the lower slot and had numerous followers to the boat. I finally hooked up on a trout, to get the skunk off, and a few cast later hooked a beautiful 30" snook. The DOA Cal jerkbait in the gold rush color did the trick. I haven't had a slam in a while and it was a great feeling to catch all three species in one day. I 'll see you on the water soon and here is one of today's red fish...Capt. Dan

Homosassa Happy 4th of July 2010

I had a 1/2 day charter out of Macrae's today on this busy holiday weekend. Lane, Terry and Lauren joined me for a fun couple of fish catching hours before the rains would chase us in. Today was one of Lane's first saltwater fishing experiences, so we kept is simple and fished around some rock piles to keep the action steady. Grouper, sea bass, snapper, grunts, ladyfish and a couple mackerel made for a great experience. A simple knocker rig and live shrimp was all we used to put a few keepers in the boat. Thank you for the great morning and hope you enjoy tonight's fish fry. I'll see you next time your in Homosassa and hope everyone has a fun and safe 4th of July... Capt. Dan

Scales and Shells July 3rd 2010

I was originally going to go solo today and catch a couple trout for a family fish fry. I got a call from some friends and asked if we could do some scalloping and and a little fishing. I gladly said yes and in just minutes from the boat ramp, we were catching trout. I have been running offshore for the majority of my charters but we tried a couple places inshore and did exceptionally well. Using DOA deadly combos in the holographic root beer was the ticket. After boating 5 keeper trout and numerous shorts, we ran to the scallop grounds and in a couple of stops we had enough for a trout and scallop dinner. Thanks to Todd and Cassie for the fun afternoon and look forward to seeing you again... Capt. Dan
