I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving and if you were feeling like me, it was a little tough to get going this morning from eating such a great meal. However, a couple cups of coffee and rigging up the rods; I was ready for a great day with Matt, Mike and Tom out of Crystal River. Leaving from Pete's Pier Marina, we ran out the river and we were welcomed to an "extremely low tide". I had to get creative on my fishing locations, but deciding on working the cuts between the oyster bars, we began catching several trout to start the day. The trout bite was pretty steady, but I wanted to gives the guys a little variety, so we ran offshore to the rock piles and found a mixed bag. Numerous grouper, sea bass, grunts, porgys, mackerel and sheepshead filled out our afternoon catch, before we ran back inshore to find a last minute red fish. Back in the creeks, with a minimal high tide, we caught a couple under slot red fish; while Matt had the hot rod and picked up a beautiful 24" keeper to end the day. Thanks guys for the great time and enjoy all the variety of species for your fish fry... Capt. Dan

Double Digit Reds

Wow, what a red fish day! I had Ross and Mindy on board again for their second day Crystal River Charter and the bite was on. We left from Pete's Pier Marina, began the day catching several trout on the DOA deadly combos and waited for the tide to get right for red fishing. After a great trout day on Monday, I wanted to target red fish for the afternoon tide and the conditions were shaping up perfect. We hit the creeks just after noon and the red fish were on the feed. We boated 27 red fish and it was fish on for almost an hour. Using free lined live shrimp was the bait of choice and presenting the shrimp in with the mullet schools, was our technique. We picked up a couple more trout for the afternoon and called it a day. I thank you both for a great couple days and really enjoyed the exceptional day today. Have a safe trip back to Minnesota and look forward to your next visit... Capt. Dan

Rocky Mountain Trout

Today was a charter I had arranged with the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation and James and Carol were my lucky anglers to win the trip. The game plan was to target trout for our 1/2 day Crystal River charter and we found some beautiful shallow water trout. Working the kelp grass beds to the North, we had steady trout action all morning and put several nice keepers in the cooler. The ever productive DOA deadly combos in the glow shrimp color was our top producing bait today. A quick little tip; when the water is a little off color like it has been especially to the North, the glow color really produces well. It was a great morning and I thank you both for the wonderful time. Good luck in your hunting adventures and enjoy the fresh trout... Capt. Dan

Thanksgiving week Trout

Ross, Mindy and Ed were on board for their annual visit to Florida and the gang was ready to catch some trout. We left from Pete's Pier Marina this morning and we covered all the bases from the shallow flats, to the outer spoil islands. We caught plenty of fish at all the locations, but the majority of the keepers came from the spoil islands. We used Mirrolure Lil' Johns on a DOA 1/8th oz jig heads and these baits are truly amazing. There scented, durable and they have not let me down yet (the trout like them too). We just targeted trout for the day, so there would be plenty of fish to take back home to Minnesota for several fish frys. I thank you all for the great time and I'll see you again on Wednesday... I had a father and son team on board today out of Crystal River, and Bill Jr. and Sr. had a great day. With a perfect morning incoming tide, we began the day catching several back country red fish on Pete's Piers finest live shrimp. We boated nine reds, made a quick run south and started picking up some very nice trout. Using a combination of Mirrolure Lil' Johns and DOA shrimp, the guys had some great trout action in the shallow water. For the last stop of the day, we targeted the rock piles and found a few Spanish mackerel and sea bass willing to bend our rods before we called it a day. Perfect weather, good friends and a nice catch; I thank you both for the wonderful time... Capt. Dan

We're getting close to sheepshead season and we picked up a beautiful one today while we were catching some trout and red fish. I was at the Homosassa Fishing Club with fellow Homosassa Guides Association Captains Mark Zorn and William Toney for a full day out of Homosassa. We did a combination of morning fishing, shore lunch and finished out the afternoon with a quick drift for a couple more trout. The trout bite was quite good and Frank and Tim had 11 keepers throughout the day on the DOA holographic root beer shrimp deadly combos. Along with the trout, we also had a mixed catch of red fish, black drum, sea bass and the big sheepshead. I thank you guys for the fun time and always look forward to seeing you again. Here's Tim with his prize sheepshead... Capt. Dan

Trout's Open All Year!!!!

This news is just in! Starting February 1st 2012, trout season will remain open all year. In years past, the month of February was our closed month for speckled trout. It appears trout stocks are doing great and the closed month is not necessary any longer. I look forward to having some great winter trout charters will all my clients and hope to see you all soon... I had a last minute call from one of my regular clients; Dan from New York was in town and wanted to squeeze in a 1/2 day charter. I had the morning open and Dan along with his friend Bell, spent the morning with me doing some river red fishing. It was blowing pretty hard out of the NE, so we just targeted the rock piles in the river and had a great morning. We boated 13 red fish, along with our limit of three keepers around the 23" mark and released all the others unharmed. We tried our luck at finding some trout and we caught quite a few, but mostly all shorts before the wind chased us in. It was a perfect morning just to be on the water and I thank you both for the fun time. Here's Dan with the first red fish of the morning... Capt. Dan

Unfortunately, today was the last day of the 2011 gag grouper season. To sum the season up in one word - Fantastic! The only down side to the short season was loosing several days to windy conditions and not being able to put all my great clients on a fresh grouper dinner. However, today we ended it with a bang. Ralph, Diana, Carol and Mike joined me out of Macrae's for a full day of trolling up some grouper. Leaving the Homosassa river to foggy conditions and running south to 22ft of water, we hit the mother-load of keeper sized gags. Today may just be one of the best grouper bites I've experienced and in less than 45 minutes, we had our eight fish limit. The water was crystal clear and we were watching several grouper follow each of the fish we were reeling in. Just after 11am we had our limit and we decided to take our time running in and call it a day. I want to thank you all for the unbeleivable experience today and enjoy tonight's grouper dinner... Yo-Zuri Gags. Nov. 14th 2011

Today was a fun day with my good friend George from Yo-Zuri lures. We did some research and development on some new upcoming plugs and I think you all will be impressed with the future products. With only a day left before the end of the extremely short grouper season, we had to catch a couple last minute gags. We trolled the 20ft depth range and we actually had a bit of a tough day. Slick seas, (surprisingly) dirty water and no wind made it difficult to get a bite going, but we did find a couple good ones. A great time, good stories and I look forward to using some of the new 2012 products. Here's George with a couple of today's grouper... Capt. Dan
