Bonito are Back...

A bit of a slow one, but we caught some grouper and bonito to save the day. I had Mishel on board and our plan was to catch a few more grouper for her final day of her three day Crystal River charter. The bite has been excellent the last few days for the gags, but today it just wasn't so. We trolled various rocks and ledges and were only able to come up with one keeper. The bonito are back on the scene harassing bait fish schools just offshore and we caught one just for fun. Bonito may not be good table fair, but they will definitely give your drag a work out. They are constantly on the move, so try to find out there direction and lead them accordingly if you would like to run one down. I can't thank you enough for these last few days of great fishing and I always look forward to fishing with you. Here's Mishel with a "poor man's tuna" a Crystal River Bonito... Capt. Dan

Crystal River Big Gags....

We set the bar for the big grouper of the 2013 season and Earl, Mishel and Bruce did great. I met the gang at Pete's Pier Marina and we made our way West. It was a little bumpy for the morning hours of today's grouper trip, but the winds finally calmed and the grouper turned on. We set out the plugs and found some really nice grouper. Earl had the big fish honors and he landed the largest grouper of the 2013 season... so far. Rapala x-rap 20's were the magic plugs and I can't thank you all enough for the great day. Here's Earl with quite a grouper to be proud of - especially with it being caught insight of land. Great job... Capt. Dan

I think I'm still rockin' and rollin' as I type this report. It was a windy one on the big pond, but Mishel, Earl and Dan hung in there and we caught some good ones. Not being sure if I was going to be able to give grouper a try, so we stayed inshore, tucked inside the mangrove islands and found some red fish. No real big ones today, but two slot fish and a couple little ones to get our day started. All the red fish posed for a quick picture and we watched them swim away. The wind calmed ever so slightly and we trolled some shallow ledges to find a grouper. Well, we did great and everyone caught a keeper gag and even had a couple get the best of us. Rapala CD 14's were the plug of the day. Definitely tough conditions today, but everyone did great and i thank you all for the fun time. Here's Mishel with one of today's gag grouper... Capt. Dan

Very comfortable conditions on the flats today out of Crystal River and with out a doubt, we had a hint of fall in the air. I had Joanne and Joe on board for a 1/2 day charter and we had a good catch of trout and a hefty over slot red fish for the day. I covered some ground to find some red fish and on the last spot, we found one. I have a feeling this NE wind that's with us for the next couple days is going to change things a little bit; but the fish will get acclimated to the change soon. The trout action was good in about 3ft of water over the "yellow" bottom areas with kelp grass and bourbon MirrOlure Lil' Johns did their job once again. I thank you both as always for a great time and look forward to our next Crystal River Charter... Capt. Dan

Crystal River Trout & Reds...

The rain, rain has finally gone away!!! Today's Crystal River charter was a fun one with the McNamee family on board and the guys did great. We left from Pete's Pier Marina just before 8am and with the top of the tide turning to go out, we began the charter catching a couple red fish. We ran south and worked the outer keys and once again, free lined live shrimp in the mullet schools did just fine for the reds. A couple keepers and under slot reds got the day going and for the rest of the day, we tackled some trout. We made a series of long drifts off the keys and the first drift was quite good. However, after that, the bite slowed and for the afternoon there wasn't much action. Bourbon colored Lil' Johns was the top color today, but a few trout did come on the fire tiger DOA shrimp. It was a fun time with you guys and I look forward to seeing you all again in the future... Capt. Dan

Homosassa Ladies Team...

What an awesome group on board today out of the Homosassa Fishing Club! I had Kim, Ashley and Kristy with me for the day and these lady anglers did fantastic. We left the club dock a little after 8am and made our way to the grass flats around the Homosassa Bird Rack. The trout action was steady with DOA deadly combos and Mirrolure Lil' Johns and the darker bourbon color was the ticket. The team put nine keepers in the box before our noon shore lunch and we missed the top boat catch to Capt. Jim Long by one fish. Myself and the other guides prepared another fine shore lunch and these last two days have been a blast. I thank you all for the fun time and here's my group with a fine catch of Homosassa trout... Homosassa Club Trout....

Great weather, great fishing and a shore lunch to remember. Today was the Smith party at the Homosassa Fishing Club and myself and fellow Homosassa Guides Association Captains William Toney, Rick Spratt, Gary Cox, Clay Shidler, Jim long and Fred Lyles did an outstanding job. We loaded up the crew and spent the morning using DOA deadly combo rigs off the keys and all the boats had good catches of trout. A noon shore lunch was on order and the hush puppies, baked beans, fried fish and Capt. Spratts famous grilled fish was spot on today. With our bellies full and a hour to fish, a couple red fish were caught to end the day and I thank you all for the fun time. Here's my crew with a few trout from today's trip.. Capt. Dan

Crystal River Reds....

A fun 1/2 day trip with Tom on board and I found him a couple nice red fish. Tom was solo today and we've had some great trout catches in the past, but I focused on the red fish plan today. We made our way North again to a series of oyster bars and waited on the tide. Even though there was a stiff East wind, the approaching full moon tide made its way in. The the mullet start eventually jumping and came schooling by us and the red fish soon followed. We caught a couple keepers, a small one and then a couple got the best of us. A comfortable day on the water and I thank you for the great time... Capt. Dan

Yesterday the reds did not want to play, but today, they were hungry for a shrimp. I had a solo charter today and Mrs. Linda joined me out of Crystal River for a 1/2 day charter. We ran a little ways North and worked some of the oyster bars on the incoming tide. It took a bit for the tide to turn with the steady East wind, but by 11am it was just right. The mullet were happily jumping and the reds were right there underneath. Linda did a fine job catching a couple beautiful red fish to make her trip a success. i thank you for the fun day and look forward to seeing you again soon... Capt. Dan
