A Bumpy One...

We were Rockin' and Rollin' out there today with Sue and Debra on board, but we hung in there and caught a couple. The gusty NW wind pushed in a little bit of tide and we were able to red fish for a couple hours. As many of you know, I've been on the offshore game for a while; so it took me a bit to find some red fish - but we did catch several. The shorts were keeping us busy and Debra caught her first keeper red fish. The tide finally dropped out and in amongst the white caps, we caught some fine keeper trout to finish up the day. A fun day with you both and I thank you for the great time... Capt. Dan

An awesome bite offshore today and the grouper were running down the plugs. I had Gary, Ron and Josh on board for the day and we made the run to the 25ft range and trolled up a beautiful limit of hefty gags. The grouper were biting well and four of the keepers today were over the 12lb mark up to 17lbs. The team finished up their limit by noon; and we anchored down and filled the cooler with some grunts to add some more tasty fillets to the mix. I'm not sure how the next couple of days will play out with the strong cold front coming, but we'll keep our fingers crossed and hope the fishing stays good... Capt. Dan

A great day with an old friend. Bo joined me for the day and I haven't fished with him for close to 15yrs. I went to school with Bo throughout the years, played all the sports together and it sure was a fun to be on the boat together again. Today we ran way south to put some time on the new engine and break her in right. We trolled up a limit of gags up to 17lbs and only took one fish on each rock we trolled over. I've been dying to catch a hog fish on hook and line and I've spear fished several, but never on rod and reel. Well, I stopped on a high profile rock in 23ft of water and finally did it. We had to cull through lots of grunts, but mission accomplished "and we actually caught two". I thank you Bo for the fun day and please check out my Crystal River Fishing Facebook page for additional pictures as always.

Team Mercury...

It's that time of year again and I'm blessed to part of the Mercury Marine pro team. Gulf Coast Marine in Homosassa just installed today my new 225 Mercury ProXS Optimax for the upcoming 2015 year. All of you that have fished with me know how impressive these engines are and why I choose to use them. I thank Gulf Coast Marine and Mercury for your sponsorship and look forward to many happy fish catches under the new power... Capt. Dan

You couldn't have ordered up a more beautiful day. Skip, Chuck and Dave were with me for their annual offshore grouper trip and they hit it out of the park once again. We left the marina and were welcomed to calm seas and hungry grouper. We trolled our Rapala x-raps over a couple different structures and reached our six fish limit by 11:30am. The guys did great and they have their annual church fish fry coming up; so we anchored down and filled the cooler with tasty grunts. A perfect day and I thank you all again for the great time... Big Shark, Gags & Grunts...

A nice mix on today's Crystal River charter with Sam and Frank and the seas have calmed to make it back on the water. I took the team offshore for the day and we had some very good action. From 15ft of water to 25ft, we caught plenty of fine eating grunts, gag grouper and released several keeper sized red grouper. Sam had big fish honors with a large 7ft shark that gave him a great fight to remember. We actually got it boat side for some cool pictures and sent it on its way. A fun day and I thank you both for the great time... Capt. Dan

We have a stiff NE breeze coming tomorrow according to the NOAA weather forecast and I was glad to troll up some gags today. I had Gilbert, Sherri and Paul on board for the day and grouper was on their menu. The seas' were rocking and rolling for the morning hours and we stayed close to shore and fished some shallow ledges in hopes of scrapping out some grouper. We caught some on bait, but they were all on the short side along with several sharks and the bite was quite slow from spot to spot. Finally, around 1pm I was able to a make a couple mile run to some good hard bottom and troll up some fine gag grouper. Rapala x-rap 20's in the blue mackerel color were the baits of the day and the grouper hit them hard. I had to cancel tomorrows charter with the weather being unfavorable, but I'll be back on the water soon.... Capt. Dan

Slow gags, Hot Reds...

Not the hot gag grouper bite like yesterday, but we caught a few. I had Casey on board for the day and we made our run to the rocks. The sea's were up some, so we stayed in the 10ft range like yesterday; but the bite wasn't nearly as hot. I put out a spread of baits and we landed one nice fish around 15lbs, plus several shorts. The sea's calmed around noon and made a jump to the 25ft range. The red grouper action was excellent with lot's of keepers, but unfortunately the season is closed. We didn't have any more gag bites and burned through our baits releasing red grouper. Always a fun time with you bud and look forward to seeing you next time... Capt. Dan

Homosassa Big Dogs....

A week ago today the trout fishing was fantastic, but today it just wasn't happening. I was out of Macrae's on the Homosassa River fishing Tom and his family Karl and Stephen. The wind was up a bit for the morning hours and we gave it our best trout fishing, as I drove all over the "entire" gulf of Mexico it seemed like. One trout and that was it for a couple hours of fishing. The good news was, the winds layed down around 10:30 and we ran West. I stopped on a shallow rock in 10ft of water and in 20 minutes the guys had six beautiful grouper on ice - some really large ones too. We wrapped up the day and added one red fish to the catch and we headed to the dock. An awesome day grouper fishing and I thank you all for the fun time... Capt. Dan

Crystal River Hot Grouper...

Just about a mirror image to yesterday's charter, but we stayed in a bit shallower to find the gags. Scott, David and Jordan were with me for the day and we made the run offshore. I had plenty of thread fin herring on board, but I always like to catch them on plugs if I can. We sent down the rapala x-raps and the rest is history. The team had an awesome day of catching their limit of grouper, plus some grunts and mackerel on the rocks. I can't thank you all enough for the fun time and here's the team with a fine catch of Crystal River grouper... Capt. Dan
