Another Windy Cold Front...

Yes folks, another windy cold front is coming through the area and it limited my range on where I could fish today. I had Bill on board for a 1/2 day Crystal River charter and we stayed in the river, to make the best of a windy situation. We began today's charter targeting snook and had some success boating six beautiful snook to start our day. We used yo-zuri 3D minnows in the green back and white color combinations to land our snook. Our next species was some tasty mangrove snapper. Fishing some springs and rock ledges with free lined live shrimp, we caught or limit of legal snapper to add to the mix. We didn't trout or red fish today due to the conditions, but we made the best it and had a great time. I thank you Bill and look forward to fishing again soon... Capt. Dan

I'm sure you all know, but the weather the last few days has been horrific. A blustry cold front, with winds 20 to 30 mph has kept me off the water and ended the 2012 grouper season on a sad note. I had taken the last few days of the grouper season to spend with my wife and add a couple grouper fillets to our freezer. However, mother nature had other plans, so we were land locked for two of the three days and luckily we were able to make it out today. The gulf waters looked like chocolate milk, so plan B was to stay in the river and find a couple snook. The snook cooperated nicly and we caught and released serveral young, up and coming snook to make our day a success. The yo-zuri 3D minnow was the bait of choice for the day. I'll see you on the water soon... Capt. Dan

Crystal River Bonus Snook...

The weatherman was right today with the 15mph NW winds and it definitely made today a little challenging. I had Mishel and Earl on board out of Pete's Pier Marina and we gave it our best to find a couple grouper. The water was quite dirty and the floating grass was an issue which made trolling difficult, but when we had a clean drag, we caught a couple keepers. The CD Rapala fire tiger 14's were the plugs of choice. For an extra bonus,  Mishel caught a beautiful snook while trolling for grouper to top off the day. A nice triple tail was added to the mix and a windy, but fun day out of Crystal River was had by all. I thank you both again and we'll see you soon... Capt. Dan

Windy, Windy, Windy...

Oh yes, the weather man was right today and we had a steady NE wind all day long. I had John on board again for a fun day out of Crystal River and despite the less than desirable conditions, we caught quite a few fish. The trout bite was fair for us most of the day, but mostly shorts were keeping our rods bent. We used a variety of techniques and everything worked well from the cork rigs to the jigs on the bottom. After several hours of being blown around, we hit the creeks and found a nice salt river snook. We were actually targeting red fish and this fine snook grabbed a gold spoon for a pleasant surprise. Thanks John for the great time and we'll go again with better conditions... Capt. Dan

Silver Hooked Up!!!!

Finally, today was the day. My good friend Matt and I teamed up, and we were on a mission to get on the tarpon. On the days I haven't been posting reports with my charters, I've been chasing down the silver king. I've had a couple shots at some fish, but only two quick hook ups so far this season - until today.  Locating pods of fish today, we were in the right place at the right time and hooking in to three tarpon. Two of the hook ups were immediately rejected and the other, we brought boat side. It was a great fight with the fish jumping five times, until the hook pulled right at boat side. We did get a couple action pictutres, but nothing to great. To end our trip, I suggested trying for a snook and we found a couple good ones to end the day. Thanks Matt for the great time and look forward to going again soon... Capt. Dan

Florida Sportsman Snook!

Just a quick update. I had my long time friend and very respected outdoor writer David Brown on board for a feature story on Crystal River today. We caught some great fish and I don't want to give to much away, so please stay tuned for a future story in Florida Sportsman magazine. Here's David with one of today's "models"... Capt. Dan

SNOOKZILLA...

A late afternoon 1/2 day trip with my good friend Capt. Mark Zorn and we fished the Faulk party, out of the Best Western on the Crystal River. I had Woody and Scott on board and targeting trout was our afternoon plan. We arrived at our destination, started jigging with MirrOlure Lil' Johns and caught some beautiful trout. We had nine keepers for the afternoon, released several under slot trout and then the big snook surprise. While we were catching our trout, a monster snook took the jig and the fight was on. It was close to a 15 minute battle and into the net was the biggest snook I've had on board to date. A couple quick pictures and we safely released her back into the water and watched her swim away. Capt. Z did great as well and he had eleven trout for his crew to make our afternoon trip a success. Thanks guys for the great time and enjoy tonight's fish being preparred at Oysters in Crystal River... Capt. Dan
