Wyoming, Yellowstone & all streams in between...

Written by
All I can say is "unbelievable"!  From the outstanding trout fishing, beautiful scenery and abundant wildlife; this vacation was exceptionally memorable. There is so much to talk about, but I'll pretty much sum up the NW, Wyoming fishing. I had the opportunity to fish a variety of waters for the past 10 days and we totaled over 1,400 miles in our rented SUV. Rivers, creeks and streams such as the Snake, Yellowstone, Greys, Granite, Crystal, Gros Venture, Cliff, Fire Hole, Madison and Gibbons to name a few, produced some outstanding fishing with the fine spotted or "snake river" cutthroat trout being the main targeted species. I did however, catch a mix of brown, rainbow, brook and a couple Yellowstone cutthroats to fill out the trip. The dry fly fishing was exceptional and patterns that I tied such as elk hair caddis, Letort hoppers, yellow sallies, march browns, olive and purple cone head buggers, were the top producing patterns. The norm out West is to use large, and I mean large, attractor dry fly patterns, but yours truly here used smaller flies in the size 12 to 18 range and  totaled over 80 trout for the trip. (If you go West, don't be afraid to use smaller flies, especially on the heavily fished waters in Yellowstone). The larger trout came on the bugger patters in the deep pools and I actually broke off two large trout that were well in excess of 20", I'll get them next time. The town of Jackson was a lot of fun and the fine food and drinks topped it all off. I also want to send a big thank you to the Snake River Anglers fly shop in downtown Jackson, for all the great advice and making me feel very welcomed to their area. These guys know whats happening and out of several fly shops visited, there isn't another shop that compares to their expertise. I did quite a bit of home work where to fish on the wading rivers and it definitely paid off with great success. For the larger rivers, such as the snake, a float trip is a must and I ensure I'll do so on my next visit. Thank you again to all my new contacts and great family "especially my patient wife" for the fun time. Here's actually the last trout of the trip, a beautiful Yellowstone river cutthroat, that fell to a purple colored rabbit fur bugger... Capt. Dan
