Nature Coast Outdoors!!!

Once the fog cleared, it was a perfect day to be offshore. Today my great friend Capt. William Toney, the host of the fantastic local TV show "Nature Coast Outdoors" and I filmed a great show targeting sheepshead on the rocks off Crystal River. We left from the Plantation on Crystal River and made our way offshore. The weather got us down yesterday, but today it was excellent. Non stop action with sheepshead and grouper - it will be a good one to tune in on in the coming weeks. I always enjoy fishing with you bud, and thanks for a great day... Capt. Dan

Catch and Release Gags...

What an incredible day to be offshore. Calm seas, top to bottom visibility and the grouper were on! I had my dear great clients Mishel and Earl on board for the day and as a treat, they asked if my wife Becky could come along and join the fun. The day was perfect for trolling and we trolled up some fine grouper on Rapala x-rap 20's. Just about all the gags were above the 14lb mark and the largest was just under 20lbs. We did anchor up and try our luck for a hog fish, but none today. Lots of non stop action though with grunts, more large grouper and a trigger fish. A beautiful day with great friends and family and I thank you all so much for the excellent day.... Capt. Dan

Homosassa Offshore Day 2.

Day two fishing the Smith party out of the Homosassa Fishing Club and we trekked it offshore once again. There was not a ripple on the big pond and the conditions couldn't have been more favorable. Lately, "as you can tell," on the days when I can; I'm trying to get a consistent pattern with the offshore hog fish. Hog fish are common fair for spear-fisherman, but not really known all to well to be caught on hook and line. Well, I'm putting my home work in and catching more and more each trip. They are, the absolute best eating fish in the gulf which makes them so sought after. For today's trip, we fished the 25ft range and had some great action. Three hog fish came aboard, along with lots of grunts, sheepshead and some catch and release gag and red grouper. We pulled anchor just afternoon, and finished up the day with a fine Homossassa shore lunch. I thank you all for the great couple of days and here's Geno with one of our beautiful hog fish... Capt. Homosassa Offshore...

What a day to go offshore. I was at the Homosassa Fishing Club fishing the Smith party with fellow Homosassa Guide Association Captains Mark Zorn, Rick Spratt, Johnathan Hamilton, Jody Johnson and Mike Baize. I had Matt, Robinson and Tom on board for the day and we headed West. I ran to some of my favorite high profile rocks in 12ft of water to check on the sheepshead. The sheepshead bite was excellent and we kept about a dozen on the first rock, before we ran to 22ft of water to add some other goodies to the mix. Once we anchored in 20ft of water, the action was awesome. Numerous grunts, keeper sized gags and a beautiful bonus hog fish filled out our afternoon. The guys had a blast and a box full of fish to show for it. I thank you all for the great day and here's Robinson with a beautiful Homosassa Hog Fish... Capt. Dan

Offshore Inventory...

A picture perfect day offshore Crystal River with Hazel and Bill on board again and we had a ball. This was a catch and release trip, so I was just as excited as they were, " I was wanting to check on the grouper". We trolled over just a couple spots and the gags were hitting just about every pass. We released some fine ones over the 10lb mark and then mixed it up on some rocks for a little variety. A couple more grouper, sheepshead and some real nice sea bass filled out our afternoon - it was a great time. I thank you both and I look forward to seeing you next time... Capt. Dan

What a year for the 2014 gag grouper season. This was without a doubt the best year I've ever experienced and the population is extremely healthy and strong. I thank all my clients for the many special days we had and the great memories we made. Only a handful of charters we didn't get our limit and this was due to the weather conditions and breaking off some "big ones". I look forward to next year and I usually book up months in advance, so soon as we know the upcoming season- I would be honored to have you all on board..... Today though, was the last day for the state waters grouper season and yesterday was the last for the Federal waters (9miles on out). I had my wife Becky on board for our second annual season closure and had an awesome day. She trolled up a awesome limit of hefty gags and on the last spot we fished, we had a dozen follow up the last fish to "say good bye". A great day and I thank you all again. Now let's catch some trout, red fish and sheepshead... Capt. Dan

Family Day Gags....

A little bit choppy out there for the morning hours, but the afternoon was smooth as glass. Today I had my wife Becky out for our annual grouper run trip. I generally take a day or two off at the end of the season for the family and add some fillets for the freezer. The grouper bite was good for us trolling and we fished from 15ft to 28ft of water. Just two days to go before the season ends, and then I'll be ready for some inshore and sheepshead fishing. Here's Becky with the big fish of the day... Capt. Dan

Good to be Back Offshore!!!!

It sure was good to be back offshore and thank you all for hanging in there with the lack of reports. The last two weeks weather wise has been terrible for the grouper season and the inshore has been fair with the cold water. I did fish the Homosassa Fishing Club the last two days and I'm sorry, but didn't have anything to report. Myself and several other guides caught fish, but everything was on the short side; except for Capt. Z and he found a pair of nice keeper red fish in the river. Today however, was absolutely perfect and I was able to make the run offshore and troll up some gags. I had the Russell family on board and in a matter of seconds, we had a grouper on. The rest of the day was just as good and in two locations, we had our six fish limit. I anchored and added some grunts to the mix and the team had an awesome day. Thank you all for the fun time and look forward to seeing you soon... Capt. Dan

Crystal River Trolling Gags...

It was day two with the West family and Tom and his dad Herbert had a ball. The weather was much more favorable today and we were able to spend more time tackling some grouper. However, I took a minute and a quick stop in the river to catch a couple snook before we headed West. After a couple small fun sized snook, we made our run to 20ft of water and put out the plugs. I stayed off Crystal River today and even though the water is dirty, we trolled up a fine limit of gags. They were wanting natural colors and only one came on a orange Rapala x-rap 20. To end our trip, I anchored up on a small rock and found some early arrival sheepshead and a few grunts to wrap up our day. I thank you both for a fun couple of days and look forward to seeing you soon... Capt. Dan

I'm not a weather man, but I believe it's going to be a chilly winter. Today was a cold one for sure, but Tom and Herbert bundled up and we went for a ride. I began the day with the father and son team and we caught a couple river snook to get the day going. We had one nice slot fish on, but chewed through the leader and the others were in the 15"-20" range. Next, we hit the gulf and in the choppy conditions; we were able to troll up a pair of gags. A hard effort to catch some, but we made it happen. Thank you both for the great time and look forward to our next trip... Capt. Dan
