Homosassa Morning Trout...

It was the final day for the Green party staying at Tarpon Key Lodge and we finished it up, with a fantastic morning 1/2 day charter. Merritt and Curt were on board with me today and the guys had a really good charter. We didn't fish the shallow flats, rather, we ran offshore a couple miles and made a couple drifts. The action is just about guaranteed right now in the 5ft to 8ft of water range and mixed catches are the norm. The trout bite was excellent and we totaled twenty one keepers for the trip. Root beer, bourbon and glow were the colors of the day rigged on a 1/8th oz jig head. I want to thank the entire group for a fun couple of day and myself and the other guides had a blast. We look forward to your next visit and here's Curt with a fine Homosassa trout released to fight another day... Capt. Dan

Picture perfect weather and it felt like spring again. It was back at Tarpon Key Lodge for fishing the Green party and myself, Capt. Zorn and Capt. Toney were the hosts for the days charter and afternoon shore lunch. Merritt and Jeff were on board with me today and since the gang is flying back to Atlanta tomorrow, today was just a catch and release day. There was a stiff NE breeze for the early morning hours and it was pretty "skinny" running the flats. We started the day using cork rigs off the keys and did well catching six keepers to get the day going. As the day warmed and wind calmed, we made a quick 2 mile run to about 6ft of water and made a long drift over some spotty bottom. Excellent trout action and a mixed catch of pompano, Spanish mackerel, blue fish, grouper and sea bass filled out the day nicely. We totaled 16 keeper trout "which all were safely released", before we ran back to the lodge and prepared a fantastic shore lunch. A great time today with you both and here's Merritt with a keeper trout that posed for a quick picture... Capt. Dan

Chazz Trout...

A late afternoon 1/2 day charter today out of Homosassa and my crew caught some really nice trout. Myself and Captains Rick Spratt and William Toney fished the Green party and the group is staying at the Tarpon Key Lodge. The Tarpon Key Lodge is a rental house on an island at the mouth of the Homosassa River and is quite a place to stay. For today's charter, I ran way south to Chassahowitzka Bay and worked some bars I haven't been to in some time. The trout were there in good numbers and root beer MirrOlure Lil' Johns and DOA glow cal shad tail jigs were the ticket. My crew won the pot with the most and biggest trout and I thank you all for the great time. We'll see you tomorrow... Capt. Dan

Homosassa "WINDY" Trout!!!!

Today may be a record for me in toughing it out in such "unfavorable" conditions. I joined my good friend and fellow Homosassa Guides Association member Capt. Rick Sratt for a full day out of Homosassa. It was three anglers to each boat and I had Rob, Trenton and Sam for the day and we shoved off from Macrae's at 8am, to find some trout. We reached the mouth of the river and we were welcomed to a steady South wind at about 10knts. We made a run to the outer keys and used them the best we could to make the fishing conditions more pleasant. The trout were biting pretty well despite the white caps. We totaled between the two boats, 26 keepers plus a mackerel and pompano. I will say this, by 1pm it was gusting to over 20knts at times and it was "rough". The day was a success and I thank my crew for having their sea legs and look forward to seeing you again next time you're in Homosassa... Capt. Dan

Down South Trout...

Clell was my solo guest for the day and with the tide situation the way it was, targeting trout was today's theme. For a change of scenery, we ran way south and drifted the shallow spotty bottom areas off the keys. The trout action was fair with some nice keepers, but "wow" are the lady fish ever thick. It was cast after cast with a lady fish on and they were beating the trout to the jigs. It was a fun time and I always enjoy fishing with my good friend Clell. Here's the big trout of the day... Flat Calm Trout...

It was a beautiful day out of Crystal River with Bill, Dick and Len on board, but we could have used a little breeze to get the boat moving. I met the gang a little after 8am at Pete's Pier Marina and made our way to the gulf on an outgoing tide. We spent the day targeting trout and we caught a few here and there and numerous lady fish through out the day. Our best success was offshore in about 5ft of water using DOA deadly combos calling up the trout. The standard stand alone jig wasn't working, so we made some noise and it worked well. I thank you all for fun time and here's my crew with a nice catch of trout... Capt. Dan

Crystal River to Homosassa...

We made the big swing today from the North side of Crystal River to flats off Homosassa. Jack and John were on board today for a full day charter and the guys had some busy action. The lady fish have invaded the area in full force and it was making it difficult to get to the trout. The trout we did catch, were quality fish and all came on glow DOA cal shad tail jigs and bourbon colored MirrOlure Lil' Johns. From the 8ft spotty bottom areas to the shallow flats off the keys, we caught trout in all locations. The guys did a fine job and secured plenty of fillets for dinner. I thank you both for the fun time and look forward to seeing you again soon... Capt. Dan

Working for Them...

The action wasn't steady by any means and the general consensuses with myself and the other guides today was, "we worked for them today"... I had Lee and Clell on board out of Crystal River and we found some trout in between the white caps and howling South wind. Tucking behind islands, using oyster bars to break the chop, we did it all to make the day more comfortable. All the trout came on DOA jerk baits and MirrOlure Lil' Johns with glow and bourbon being today's flavor. It was a lot of casting and I thank you guys as always for the fun time and patience. Here's Clell and Lee with today's catch... Capt. Dan

Crystal River Inside & Out...

A beautiful day on the water with Joanne and Joe on board for their charter out of Crystal River. I assured them the trout action has been great and we made our run offshore. We began drifting some spotty bottom areas in 5ft of water and caught a nice mixed bag.  Trout, macks, pompano, lady fish, grouper, etc.... kept us busy and a combination of bourbon and watermelon colored MirrOlure Lil' Johns were the ticket. We left the variety show and made a run to check on a cobia spot, but no one was home today. To end our charter, we hit a couple points and found some red fish both above and below the slot to top off the day. I thank you both for the wonderful time and look forward to seeing you again soon... Capt. Dan

Crystal River-Grand Slam!!!

My guest Matt accomplished what only very few Nature Coast anglers in our area have done and that's a Grand Slam. Snook, trout, red fish and we even found a bonus tripletail, all in today's Crystal River charter. Matt only gets to fish a couple times a year, so I pointed out some locations for him to try and we caught some different species in all the areas we covered. Today's trout were scattered inshore on the flats and we caught a couple keepers on DOA glow jerk baits. Next, we caught a beautiful snook jigging MirrOlure Lil' John's along the rocks and also landed a hefty tripletail floating on a nearby crab buoy, that couldn't resist a shrimp.  And to end the day, we hit the creeks and sight fished a slot red fish to top our charter. I thank you Matt for the great day and a big congratulations on your achievement... Capt. Dan
